NATIONAL NURSE DAY
NATIONAL NURSES DAY:
Today
is National nurses day. On this special occasion, we raise
awareness among the society about all contributions and commitments nurses
around the Globe had given to us. We acknowledge the vital role that nurses had
played in the development of the society. This day is also included in the National
Nurses Week. It is also called National RN Recognition Day.

NURSES WEEK: DAY’S IMPORTANCE AND HISTORY
National Nurses Week starts from May 6 and ends on May 12,
which is also the birthday of Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820 – August
13, 1910). She was english, social reformer, statistician, and the founder
of modern nursing. She became well-known while taking care of the wounded
soldiers during the Crimean War. Nightingale was also known as “The Lady
with the Lamp” because she has the habit of making rounds in night
with a lamp. Because of her devotion and faithful behaviour, this day is
celebrated as National Nurses Day.
HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL NURSES DAY:
Recognize
nurses everywhere around hospitals and society. Celebrate their dedication and
commitment to their patients and their profession as they were also working to
fight COVID – 19 which the world is suffering from. Aware all people about
the lovely care you’ve received from a nurse in your life.
Give
all nurses the you know a shout out and thank them for the hard work they do,
especially during these challenging times like COVID-19.

In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland, an employee at the United States Department of Health, sent a letter to President Eisenhower proposing a NationalNurses Day. An official proclamation had not been made. After that people began celebrating National Nurses Week on their own.

In 1974, President Nixon proclaimed a National Nurse Week. New Mexico nurses together initiated a resolution in 1981 to have May 6th declared National Recognition Day for Nurses. The American Nurses Association (ANA)Board of Directors took up the banner and promoted the proposal. In 1982, the United States Congress designated May 6th to be National Recognition Day for Nurses and President Ronald Reagan signed the proposal. The ANA Board of Directors later expanded the celebration in 1990 to a week-long celebration (May 6-12) known as National Nurses Week.
